A. —[Avant la Révolution] Juge ecclésiastique délégué par l'évêque pour exercer en son nom la juridiction contentieuse (d'apr. LELOIR 1961). Approchez-vous; ceci, c'est le tas des dévots (...). Ils citent Poquelin, Pascal, Rousseau, Boccace, (...) Devant l'official et le théologal (HUGO, Châtim., 1853, p.47). Les procès en matière de foi se faisaient par deux juges, l'ordinaire, qui pouvait être l'évêque lui-même ou l'official et l'Inquisiteur (A. FRANCE, J. d'Arc, t.2, 1908, p.178). La grande masse [de dossiers d'archives anciennes] est formée par des dossiers d'instruction de procès soumis à l'official de Toul (L'Hist. et ses méth., 1961, p.1083).
B. —[Actuellement] Prêtre faisant fonction de juge dans une officialité. Le code de droit canonique oblige l'évêque à désigner un official (...). Il précise également les fonctions de l'official (causes matrimoniales, différends où les clercs sont en cause) (Lar. encyclop.).
